Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure by which individual hair follicles are removed from the specific part of a body (called the ‘donor area’ or ‘donor site’) to the balding area of the body, known as the ‘recipient site’.
The donated hair follicles and surrounding tissue and skin are called ‘grafts’. Each graft may contain one, two or even three hair follicles with accompanying hair, tissue and skin. The art and science of hair restoration are equivalent in importance to the basic mechanics of this medical technique. It is also worthwhile to remember that since no two heads in the world are alike, so each procedure should be viewed from the outlook of an individual.
Once the transplanted hair start growing, it will continue to do so for a lifetime. The transplanted hair generally sheds within the first 2-3 weeks after the procedure as their hair roots enter a resting phase. Between 4-8 months, the transplanted root starts sprouting hair. To see the full improvement in terms of density, a time period of 10 to 12 months is necessary, as the hair continues to mature and thicken. Hair strengthening products like Keratene (at least two to three weeks before transplant and from one week after transplant) may hasten up the process of re-growth, while at the same time reduces further hair loss.
